wow, my guildies heard about this last week and we were sure it was just a joke. (in fact, it was presented to us as a joke)
gj on killing a skill that actually made smite monks worth a damn. it is sad when mesmers make better smiters.

As I've said before, it's not balance. It's "Okay, we've created something OP'ed. We're simply gonna kill it instead of trying to balance it so it can STILL be used, but NOT OP'ed."

Some things are beyond balance and so flawed in their design they have to be useless.
RaO falls into this category aswell despite the 25 energy cost.

If it is just a PVP update and the PVE is left alone I not quite as sad, because it seems to work good with my H/H team.

Smiters are for damage, not healing and proting and damaging all in one spell cast. THAT is what OP is and that is why it's nerfed to hell. "Let me rome your Hex, heal you for 80 hp AND deal 80 damage to anyone near you, every 12 seconds, while the other 2 smite monks on the team do the same"
I'm 100% possitive the skill WILL be brought back in some form in the future, The Current nerf is to remove it from the game because of the MASSIVE ammounts of people/teams/guilds abusing it. It's sooo beyond a problem right now that it has to be removed imidiatly with no time for corrective measures.
Rather than take the time to balance it they have removed until such a time that a correct skill balance can be done on it and then reintroduce it.
Great update imo.

Skill balances are like springs.
Pull them and then leave them, and they will stretch and shrink countless times until stopping.
We must wait until they stop.

Meh smiters boon wasnt that great of a skill, you still can only heal for a fraction of what a dedicated monk can do which is why teams need 4 smite monks vs 2-3 heal/prots.

Well, the good news is that ANet has shown they're not above completely reworking a skill. The latest batch of buffs shows that! (Even if they are still tweaking Glimmer.)

Then the skill isn't really smiter's boon any more, is it?

Geez, all they needed to do was to up the recharge and dial down the duration on Smiter's Boon (I actually don't mind the changes they made to those two items). The 25 energy was just over the top.
That would at least make the skill remotely useful in certain situations.

AFAIK, Izzy's pressed for time so he wanted to guarantee that Smiter's Boon is rendered unusable in this one update.

If energy management on smite monks is so good, what is to stop them from using Divine Boon instead? Definitely need to nerf that, too. 25e, 90r

Oh so you don't want smite monks to heal, eh? So maybe keep old cast/duration/recharge and make it:
"For 30 seconds, your Smiting Prayers attribute is increased by 3, but you heal for 70...10% less". Like non-elite Expert's Dexterity for Monks. And move to Divine Favor of course.

smiter's boon update: 25e, casting time 1 week, recharges never. functionality changed: everyone loses all energy, makes 50% of GW go yay and 50% go boo for 3 hrs, causes Izzy exhaustion.
No wait....that's every skill nerf

And [Enchanter's Conundrum] is? LOL They removed the whole "conundrum" aspect from it! That's just 1 off the top of my head - I'm sure there are plenty of others where the skill name doesn't reflect the skill's powers.
Point being: ANet has reworked skills completely so that they might be usable. So, it is possible to change Smiter's Boon into an actual boon for smiters!
